Understanding Herbal Constituents & Plant Chemistry is now available in ten online modules. Each module is three weeks long and can be taken independently one at a time, or as the full program.

Polyphenols 2: Flavonoids (multiple subgroups), Anthocyanins, Tannins, Isoflavonoids (phytoestrogens), Terpenophenolics (cannabinoids)

Continuing to explore the very large group of Polyphenols, this module presents the structures, relationships, actions, safety and occurrence of compounds in the remaining subcategories, including the important flavonoids (with their own multiple subgroups) and their relatives, the OPCs (condensed tannins) and other tannins; the isoflavonoids (important hormonally active compounds often called phytoestrogens); and several other smaller groups including the terpenophenolics (cannabinoids).

Module 7 Details:

    • Overview of flavonoids & their importance in the diet & human health
    • Flavonoids as antioxidants: how they work
    • Subcategories of flavonoids include chalcones & aurones, flavanols, OPCs, tannins, anthocyanins, flavonols, flavones, flavanones
    • Tannins & astringency, antimicrobial properties, wound healing effects
    • Solubility of flavonoids, aglycones & glycosides
    • Which herbs & foods feature which flavonoids
    • Properties of anthocyanidins / anthocyanins (pigmented flavonoids)
    • Isoflavonoids (‘phytoestrogens’) are important hormonally active compounds
    • How isoflavonoids interact with estrogen receptors for an amphoteric effect
    • Benzofurans & Usnea – antimicrobial effects
    • Quinones: benzoquinones, naphthoquinones (Black Walnut, Henna), anthraquinone glycosides (stimulant laxative herbs, Yellow Dock)
    • Anthraquinones in St. John’s Wort (hypericin, etc.)
    • Vitamin K, CoQ10
    • Phloroglucinol derivatives: hyperforin in St. John’s Wort; terpenophenolics in Cannabis; resin acids in Hops
