Plant Walk: Prairie Plants for the Summer Heat

Michael will be talking about native prairie plants that help to cool and regulate the body during the intense heat of the coming summer months. Dozens of native plants and their uses will be discussed in detail including medicinal and edible uses, ethical wildcrafting and a variety of methods of herbal preparations.

In the cacophony of colors of our Spring wildflowers reside a medicine chest of curative properties. Texas and Dakota Vervains help to cool and regulate our nerves, Greenthread and Blanket Flower make a delicious teas to cool us during the summer heat and even for fevers, to name just a few.

We will cover:

  • An introduction to botanical medicine
  • Botanical Medicine Making basics
  • Working with South Central Texas plants
  • A local herb walk

What to bring:

  • Comfortable outdoor clothing & shoes
  • Something to take notes with
  • A camera or cell phone to take photos of plants
  • A water bottle, or anything you need to be comfortable outdoors for a few hours

COURSE INFORMATION

Date: May 9th, 2023. This is a 90 minute plant walk from 6:30 – 8:00pm.

We ask that students arrive a few minutes early to check in before class starts. We will meet in the parking lot for check-in.
