Important Notice: Students can now opt to participate in both the Doula Hands-On Training and Emergency Childbirth Training back to back. Day 1 (October 18th) is Doula Training and days 2 &3 (October 19 – 20th) will cover Emergency Childbirth Training. Students can also partake in only the Emergency Training if desired.

6 Hour Emergency Birth Hands-On Training

This is a two-day overview of practical hands-on skills for Doulas and Emergency Birth Workers covering Labor, Birth, & Postpartum Complications. We will discuss common reasons women and babies die, the many contributing factors, and what we can do about it.  You will learn skills such as taking vital signs, urinalysis, Leopold’s maneuvers, finding fetal heart tones, managing eclamptic convulsions,  and emergency antepartum scenarios.  We will also discuss and role play emergency birth scenarios such as obstructed labor, shoulder dystocia, breech birth, and hemorrhage/shock.  We will also explore ways to help babies survive like thermoregulation, helping babies breath, relactation/supplemental nursing sytems and kangaroo care.  Finally we will cover the most common reasons for postpartum death and how we can prevent the majority of these.

This experience will prepare you to manage a normal birth or common complications even in post-disaster or austere situation.

8 Hour Doula Skills Hands-On Training

This is a one-day training will supplement any doulas skill set with hands-on demonstration and practice of how to support women during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.  We will learn about herbs considered safe in pregnancy, breathing techniques,  visualizations, relaxation/stress reduction, journaling, coloring, affirmations, prenatal exercise/yoga and the power of music.  We will also explore ways a doula can help a client cope with pain in labor, acupressure, massage, repositioning baby (breech and occiput posterior), labor positions, using a rebozo, birth ball and peanut ball.  You will learn about herbs in labor and postpartum, water birth, bengkung belly wrap, rebozo wrap, newborn care, breastfeeding support and postpartum exercises.

Instructor Bio

Mel Bailey is a Midwife, Nurse, Certified Health Coach, Family Herbalist, and Yoga instructor.  She is also an Evidence Based Birth Instructor and Evidence Based Childbirth Educator.  Mel has been involved in women’s health care for over 20 years, attending her first birth in 1997.  She is the Assistant Director of EarthWise Midwives & Doulas, and an instructor and evaluator at Academia Tierra Sabia in Cuatemoc, Mexico.  Mel facilitates trainings both state-side and internationally for birth workers, as well as disaster relief workers and others in need of emergency birth skills.  Mel is also the founder of Wellness Within, providing personalized wellness guidance to individuals during pregnancy and  birth, and nurturing new families.
