Intro to Blacksmithing ⚒🔥

This 2-day class is designed to serve as a basic, hands-on introduction to the craft of bladesmithing. Instruction will include information on tools and equipment, material selection, body mechanics, design considerations, forging techniques, basic heat treating principles and finishing methods. This will be a fairly active class, with strong emphasis on student participation, and will involve a healthy amount of heat, noise, sweat, and physical exertion. Each student will start with a 1/4″x3/4″x6″ segment of high carbon spring steel, and through forging, profiling, beveling, heat treating, and finishing, create their own personal hand-forged blade.
This course will focus on introducing the basics of blacksmithing first – students will learn to blacksmith their own knife from scratch, giving students a great foundation and knowledge of working with scrap metals.

Knives will be forge-finished and students will go home with a paracord-handle, finished knife. Additionally you will receive a pair of safety glasses, ear plugs, a file, and a file card to use for the class and take home.
Students will learn to heat, pound and shape spring steel into a blade.
Students will be introduced to metals, heating, forging, hammering techniques, straightening, grinding, shaping, knife and handle making.

Water temp is not necessarily too cold to swim (< 60 F) but in my book these days it is definitely too cold to swim COMFORTABLY for any length of time, haha.
I bought this triathlon wetsuit last fall on sale because I really want to get back into off-road triathlons and adventure racing someday soon.
Finally got the pool cleaned and this is the first chance I've had to swim in the wetsuit, and I like it! Pretty boyant which I have to get used to. The water temps should stay cool enough to work out in it (especially early AM) for the next few months I hope, here. Now with my injured knee, I have been really needing something for cardio too!
My harness system maybe is about $5.00 worth of rope, webbing around my waist and two cheap bungee cords. I have literally used this same system for the 14 years we've lived here, maybe replacing one or two components of it once or twice. It works fabulously for crawl, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke.
I go by time or with freestyle, I've roughly figured out my breaths (I like to breathe every 3 strokes, bilaterally) per distance to get a general idea of how far I am swimming, so I count breaths.

Gorgeous view from near the top of a wonderful workout & hike this afternoon last week. Looking east a few hours before sunset in the Sangre de Cristo foothills near Taos.
After working with my knee injury consistently for the past 5 weeks, it has greatly improved.
Today was the first time I tried running (only short uphill sprints with careful, short strides in the snow and soft mud) and it feels better than ever tonight while stretching and moving it now.
More details on all this later after my next MRI. I am cautiously optimistic I may not need surgery.
