Medicinal Plant Walk: Herbs for Women’s Health
A 2018 survey found American women have the largest burden of chronic illness, highest rates of skipping needed health care due to cost and are the least satisfied with their care, out of 11 studied countries. Our country also has the highest rate of maternal mortality, the highest rate of caesarean section and the highest rates of breast cancer and over 25% of women routinely spend money out of pocket to cover health care.
What if more women could return to time-honored traditions of working with plants to improve health? Making herbal teas, compresses, poultices and tinctures is some of the oldest medicine, and knowledge of the body and the plants that support it is independence from a health care system that many feel is broken.
We will also talk about ethical wildcrafting, and how to keep the imprint on the natural landscape as low as possible with sustainable harvesting techniques, when the best time is to harvest plants and how to be a better land steward to the natural environment.
The workshop will include a lecture followed by a plant walk to point out any available plants that can be used to support women’s health.
Clinical herbalist Michael Blair from Herbal Medics Academy will lead students through this summer series of medicinal plant walks that cover herbs that assist the body in healing, responsible harvesting techniques and botany identification of available plants in our area!
