5 Days of Wilderness Herbal First Aid and Plant Medicine of the Southwest, April 13 – 17th, 2016.
This 5-day course is loaded with information, plant walks, hands-on experience and even full participation in an herbal clinic.
Join herbalists Sam Coffman and Michael Cottingham at Eden Hot Springs as they lead you through an incredible 5-day course that includes plant medicine of the southwestern USA, wilderness first aid, and remote & post-disaster herbal medicine.

This 5-day intensive includes the following subjects and more:
o 16-Hour Wilderness First Aid Certification (through Emergency Care and Safety Institute)
o Scene survey
o Extrication, movement and evacuation techniques in the field
o Primary and secondary assessment from head to toe
o Bandaging and splinting techniques from head to toe
o Taping and stabilizing musculoskeletal injuries for movement and weight bearing in the field
o Environmental injures (venomous bites & stings, heat, cold and altitude injuries, lightning, drowning & immersion)
o Client history and vital signs
o Several hours of Herbal First Aid with hands-on exercises
o Wound care
o Infection management
o Acute infectious disease
o Shock & pain management
o Medicine making and herbal first aid kits for a field environment
0 Medicinal plant ID walks and field herbalism lectures
0 Introduction to basic desert and mountain survival skills
0 Two books & ECSI (16-hour WFA) certification card
0 Trauma scenarios
0 Post-disaster or remote clinic and apothecary setup
0 Clinical experience: Setting up and working in an herbal clinic with actual clients
Tuition is $550 for the week and includes certification, books and materials.
*Lodging, food and travel are not included and are paid upon arrival to Michael. (see below)
LODGING, FOOD AND LOCATION:
This 5-day intensive takes place at Eden Hot Springs in southeastern Arizona. Eden Hot Springs is about a 2 hour drive east of Phoenix, AZ.
Students can camp, RV or car camp on the hot springs property, or stay at a hotel (several within 20 minutes’ drive). Cost for camping is $20 per night. For students not camping, the day-use fee is $10 per day. Students will be able to soak in any of the several hot springs pools before or after classes.
Students must provide their own meals. A large, indoor kitchen is available, as well as camp site grills and fire rings.
