Important Notice: Students can now opt to participate in both the Doula Hands-On Training and Emergency Childbirth Training back to back. Day 1 (October 10th) is Doula Training and days 2 &3 (October 11 – 12th) will cover Emergency Childbirth Training. Students can also partake in only the Emergency Training if desired.

6 Hour Emergency Birth Hands-On Training

This is a two-day overview of practical hands-on skills for Doulas and Emergency Birth Workers covering Labor, Birth, & Postpartum Complications. We will discuss common reasons women and babies die, the many contributing factors, and what we can do about it.  You will learn skills such as taking vital signs, urinalysis, Leopold’s maneuvers, finding fetal heart tones, managing eclamptic convulsions,  and emergency antepartum scenarios.  We will also discuss and role play emergency birth scenarios such as obstructed labor, shoulder dystocia, breech birth, and hemorrhage/shock.  We will also explore ways to help babies survive like thermoregulation, helping babies breath, relactation/supplemental nursing sytems and kangaroo care.  Finally we will cover the most common reasons for postpartum death and how we can prevent the majority of these.

This experience will prepare you to manage a normal birth or common complications even in post-disaster or austere situation.

8 Hour Doula Skills Hands-On Training

This is a one-day training will supplement any doulas skill set with hands-on demonstration and practice of how to support women during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.  We will learn about herbs considered safe in pregnancy, breathing techniques,  visualizations, relaxation/stress reduction, journaling, coloring, affirmations, prenatal exercise/yoga and the power of music.  We will also explore ways a doula can help a client cope with pain in labor, acupressure, massage, repositioning baby (breech and occiput posterior), labor positions, using a rebozo, birth ball and peanut ball.  You will learn about herbs in labor and postpartum, water birth, bengkung belly wrap, rebozo wrap, newborn care, breastfeeding support and postpartum exercises.

Give your clients the best care possible with these advanced skills and the opportunity to practice with other experienced & aspiring doulas.

Instructor Bio

Mel Bailey is a Midwife, Nurse, Certified Health Coach, Family Herbalist, and Yoga instructor.  She is also an Evidence Based Birth Instructor and Evidence Based Childbirth Educator.  Mel has been involved in women’s health care for over 20 years, attending her first birth in 1997.  She is the Assistant Director of EarthWise Midwives & Doulas, and an instructor and evaluator at Academia Tierra Sabia in Cuatemoc, Mexico.  Mel facilitates trainings both state-side and internationally for birth workers, as well as disaster relief workers and others in need of emergency birth skills.  Mel is also the founder of Wellness Within, providing personalized wellness guidance to individuals during pregnancy and  birth, and nurturing new families.

Austere Acute Care Medicine Intensive Course – 20202020-03-15T12:57:38+00:00

Join Dr. Steve Pehrson and Sam Coffman for our Austere Acute Care (AAC) hands-on intensive at our 50-acre campus near San Antonio, TX. Both Steve and Sam started their respective journeys into medicine as U.S. Army Special Forces Medics. Steve went on to become an emergency medicine and family practice doctor in rural Utah, while Sam became a clinical herbalist and wilderness medicine instructor. Together, they teach a unique approach to medical issues in austere, remote or post-disaster environments that integrates the worlds of orthodox & wilderness medicine with clinical herbalism.

Our October, 2020, on-site 5-day intensive is open to everyone who has passed the online, 12-week acute austere medicine course starting May, 2020.

This year’s AAC on-site training includes 5 days of highly-interactive, hands-on experience to teach you the orthodox and herbal medical skills crucial for acute care in the field. Subjects taught this year include:

  • Head to toe general physical exam
  • Musculoskeletal tests for joint, soft-tissue and bone injury
  • Head, eyes, ears, nose, throat exams – using otoscope, ophthalmoscope
  • Respiratory and cardiac exams – using stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, understanding vital signs, laryngoscopy
  • Understanding and using common tests: urine dipstick, blood glucose
  • Minor surgery techniques: Ingrown nails, abscesses, lipomas, cysts (differentiation and treatment), myringotomy, peritonsilar abscess
  • Pharmaceutical protocols: infection & inflammation
  • “Red Flag” tests and differential diagnoses that need urgent or immediate care
  • Treatment (reduction) of joint dislocations (digit, shoulder, hip, patella, elbow)
  • Understanding indications and use of tape and casting products (shoulders, wrists and hands, ribs, knees, feet & ankles, digits) for musculoskeletal and wound injuries: Cast tapes, K-tape, sports tape, P-tape, Coban, Surgical tapes, Elastikon, etc.
  • Setting up and running an austere herbal and orthodox, austere health care clinic, with a live scenario (involving real clients with real health care issues.

Botanical medicine lectures and hands-on practice with:

  • Inflammation and injury
  • Acute pain management
  • Herbal poulticing, plasters, prepared bandages
  • Preparation and logistics of medicine making for austere herbal medicine

In this online interactive workshop, we will discuss the basics of bug out bag creation, maintenance, and use for family and community security and students will work on assembling their own pack during the class!

Climate change, political conflict, and social collapse are all events we should be preparing for, and bug out bags and their uses are a crucial skill to keep for your emergency plans for you and your community.

We will be sending out some materials for students to work with for assembling a scout bag during the class. The 2-hour workshop will cover:

  • bug out bags and their classifications
  • sharing how to build and go over product uses through live feed and live interaction
  • Live exercises using what you can find in your home, store
  • Guided scavenging hunts
  • Creating a general plan of action to maintain different types of bug out bags for whatever may come
  • Sharing possible case studies with guests who will have experienced first hand climate change disasters and their lessons learned throughout the events they survived.
